Golden Village Gold Class

18 Jun

Yeah! A pair of Gold Class Tickets from my eldest sister-in-law!

Thank you sis!

It has been a long time since we last patronized Gold Class at GV Grand but we have yet try out Gold Class at GV Vivocity so this pair of tickets come in really at the right time on my birthday week for our ‘virgin’ patronage and enjoy a little luxury at the Gold Class at GV Vivocity.

Hmm…so let’s check today’s movie schedule!

OMG! Why only 3 films available?

We have already watched X-Men First Class and I know that hubby would definitely choose  Green Lantern over Mr Popper’s Penguins. But I want to watch the penguins play and Jim Carrey to entertain me while I cuddle on the comfy recliner!

Sigh! Tough choice. Or perhaps if GV allow a single entry for Gold Class, we should watch our desire movie on our own 🙂

Update – Mr Popper’s Penguins

Hubby had read this post without me knowing and was really sweet to insist us watching Mr Popper’s Penguins.  To make sure that we could have the seats for the ten o’clock show on my birthday, he again insisted that we make two trips to Vivo City on Sunday; one trip to exchange the vouchers for the tickets and come back later to watch the show as vouchers are not accepted for online reservations.

In the end, we went down early to book the show and hang around the mall till show time. That saved us the hassle of making multiple trips but cost a little bomb on parking charges instead. Besides that, wasting time away and idling at the mall were just painfully boring!

As I mentioned earlier, the last time that we have patronized Gold Class at Great World City was probably years ago and I could not recall how it looks like anymore. In comparison to its competitor,  Shaw Premiere at Nex, the reclining armchairs at the Gold Class Vivo City are really huge and comfy!  Well, I have to say that Shaw Premiere isn’t bad either and my two visits were really pleasant but I couldn’t tolerate the squeaking sound coming from my neighboring patron’s leather recliner every time he moved his body during my last visit.

Anyway, back to Mr Popper’s Penguins.

I have always love comedies and Jim Carrey is my very favorite comedian. Who can forget that plastic face from The Mask or the pathetic guy who was born and destined to live a reel life or the multiple personalities psychotic in Me, Myself and Irene? Jim Carrey’s shows never fail send me rolling and laughing off my chair. But as I watched Mr Popper’s Penguins, I can’t help to think that age has caught and stars do grow old too. Sure, the exaggerated comical expression and joker’s face is still funny, but Jim Carrey is looking a little tired and trying too hard being the master of the slapstick.

Nonetheless, with the six cute birds and the underlining family message in the film, Mr Popper’s Penguins is an edu-taining movie that worth at least a three and a half stars rating.

Animals United Movie Preview

31 May

Man is bad and in the animals’ point of view, humans are the selfish, ugly and naked beasts exploiting the natural resources.

Set in the Okavango Delta in Africa, Animals United is an entertaining tale that perhaps, more appealing to the younger children or those without much expectations. Despite the many talented voice-over casts and great CGI, the plot is too weak to instigate deeper emotions and deliver its intended message across.

There are too many storylines shattered throughout. Apart from the speech of the seven-hundred-old tortoise, most of the characters are too shallow and vague to make an impact. Some scenes are absolutely unnecessary too, ie: why bother with flooding New York City with animals at the last scene? Bringing down the entire resort should has make its point and the animals living happily in the field shall be a prettier ending than turning them into the ugly city destroyers.

Plot:
The annual flood has failed to arrive in Africa’s Okavango Delta and water is scarce and fiercely fought over. Wanting to prove to his son, Junior, Billy the meerkat sets out to find water with his best friend, a disillusioned lion called Socrates. On their journey, they meet a motley crew of animals searching for a new home after their habitats have been destroyed by fire, oil spills and or other man-made disasters. Billy discovers the reason for the lack of water in the delta: a dam has been constructed to supply energy for a luxury resort. Socrates is captured and caged and while he awaits transit to a Las Vegas casino, the animals befriend Toto, a chimpanzee who is dressed like a human and entrusted to carry out maintenance tasks at the resort. Despite being hunted by the hotel’s head of security, the animals not only break Socrates free but break down the dam that is holding back their water supply. The film ends with the animals marching on New York City to let the world know that the animal kingdom is under threat from man.

Movie: The Way Back

25 Mar

I reckoned that life is already one intense and tough issue so I would usually ordered my entertainment to be light and funny. For that reason, I’ve procrastinated for a week before finally hopping over to the cinema to watch The Way Back.

The movie was loosely based on The Long Walk, a book by Slawomir Rawicz, depicting his alleged escape from a Siberian gulag and subsequent 4,000-mile walk to freedom in India. With a plot of three men walking 4000 miles to go home, the 133 minute run time may seem a little dragging halfway through, but nonetheless, Peter Weir has successfully crafted a compelling and heart-warming story and bought out the best of mankind – looking out for another and keeping together, even if it was surviving in the most difficult circumstances.

I watched the movie with a heavy heart and left the theatre, inspired by the characters’ strong will and determination and and touched by their burning desire to break free.

Verdict: ****/5

Director: Peter Weir

Cast: Jim SturgessEd Harris and Colin Farrell

The Plot:

The film begins with Janusz, a Polish POW, being interrogated by a Soviet officer. Janusz refuses to admit his guilt. His wife is brought in to the room and forced to make a statement condemning Janusz. Janusz is sentenced to 20 years in the gulag.

At the camp in Siberia, Janusz meets Mr Smith, an American; an actor named Khabarov; Valka, a hardened Russian criminal; Tomasz, who makes a living by sketching erotic drawings in exchange for food and clothes; Kazik, a Pole who suffers from night blindness; Voss, a Latvian priest; and Zoran, a Yugoslav accountant. Khabarov confides to Janusz that he has a plan for escaping. Khabarov’s proposed route is south to Mongolia, passing Lake Baikal. Mr Smith tells Janusz that Khabarov is fantasising about his desire to escape in order to improve his own morale, and that, in his opinion, escape is impossible. Janusz maintains his resolve.

During a severe snowstorm, Janusz decides to implement the escape plan. Mr Smith, Valka, Zoran, Voss, Tomasz and Kazik escape with him. On the first night while looking for firewood, Kazik becomes lost and freezes to death. He is buried but the group celebrate the fact that he died a free man.

With Janusz leading the way, and navigating, the party successfully negotiate the first part of their journey across the snows of Siberia.

When they reach Lake Baikal they come across a girl, Irena, who tells them she escaped from a collective farm outside Warsaw after her parents were murdered by Russian soldiers. Smith finds out that this cannot be true, since the Russians had not yet reached Warsaw by that time and the city was in fact under German control, but he understands that the girl was trying to make up a story in order to conceal a more tragic experience and forgives her.

Eventually the party reach the Russian/Mongolian border but Valka decides to stay in Russia, because, despite his imprisonment, he still sees Russia as his homeland, and Stalin as a hero.

The group carry on to Ulaanbaatar but as Irena sees images of Josef Stalin and a red star, implying that Mongolia is now a Communist state, and they will not be safe there, they decide that the closest safe place is India and so continue south, across the Gobi desert.

As they cross the desert, the party become increasingly dehydrated, but soon discover a well. They stock up with as much water as they can carry and continue on, but a sandstorm strikes and they lose some of the water. As they cross the desert the water runs out and the group begin to grow weak with blisters and sunstroke. Irena repeatedly collapses and eventually dies.

The remaining five continue walking until Tomasz dies and Smith loses the will to live. That evening, while Zoran and Voss continue, Janusz stays behind with the apparently dying Smith. Smith tells Janusz that he cannot overcome the guilt of taking his son to Russia. Janusz explains that he is motivated by the desire to see his wife again so he can forgive her and she can thereby forgive herself, implying Smith should forgive himself too. Smith rejoins the group and the next day they find a small stream of water to save them from dehydration.

By now they are in sight of the Himalayas and whilst resting on a rock are found by a Sherpa who guides them to a Buddhist monastery. They regain their strength but are told by the monks that India cannot safely be reached until spring. Smith decides to continue to Lhasa where there is an American military mission that will enable him to return to the United States, telling the others “they’ve made it.”

Despite the warning of unpredictable snow making the journey difficult, they continue over the Himalayas until they reach the Indian border, where they are given a warm welcome by the locals.

The film ends with Janusz reminiscing about returning home to his wife in 1989. This is followed by a montage of the Communist rule in Poland and its eventual overthrow. The final scene shows Janusz and his wife reunited.

Post Party at Gallery Bar, St James Power Station

After the show, we were invited to continue the night at Gallery Bar, St James Power Station.

While waiting for the casts to join us at the party, drinks were served and the host warmed up the atmosphere and played a little question and answer game with the audience and the lucky ones have walked away with some movie goodies.

When Jack Neo, A-Niu, Rebecca Lim and Koe Yeet appeared, the crowd went all high and everybody dashed in front of the stage with cameras flashing non-stop trying to get the best shots.

With a short presentation, the team began to sing the movie soundtrack 《笑著回家》for us. After the song, Jack Neo and A-Niu lightheartedly make fun of one another and the humorous A-Niu began to ‘complain’ about his mother ‘Karen Neo’ and teased Rebecca on her singing.

Before leaving the stage, Jack Neo urged us to enjoy ourselves at this informal gathering, which we did.

HOMECOMING 《笑着回家》

Genre: Comedy
Director: Lee Thean-Jeen
Cast: Mark Lee, Jack Neo, A Niu, Afdlin Shauki, Jacelyn Tay, Huang Wenhong, Rebecca Lim, Koe Yeet, Liu Ling Ling
RunTime: 1 hr 30 mins

Synopsis: “Homecoming” is about three stories of three different individuals going home for Chinese New Year. A major highlight of the movie is that Jack Neo, who will be cross-dressing on the big screen again after eleven years since “Liang Po Po The Movie” back in 1999. He will be playing mother to Ah Niu’s character. It is said that he was told to lose at least 5kg for his role. Jack Neo long time collaborator Mark Lee and Malaysian multi-talented writer-director-comedian Afdlin Shauki are among the cast.

************

So, do I want to watch Homecoming?

Absolutely!

Well, apart from supporting our local movie and I simply love the good laugh that Jack Neo’s comedies never fails to bring.

Famous or infamously, Jack Neo has made梁婆婆 the funniest grandma in town in 1993. In 1995, he made梁细妹 the most popular auntie in Singapore. Now in 2011, our homegrown director and the most successful woman imposter strikes again, this time as Karen Neo. Together the rest of the equally great comedians such as the Malaysian Director/Singer Ah Niu, Mark Lee and Liu Ling Ling, I am sure Homecoming will make the audiences burst with laughter.

Last but not least, the movie also stars Jaclyn Tay, the pretty actress-turned-successful business-owner. It has been quite a while since her last appearance on the silver screen and it will really nice to be able to watch her again.

Movie Review: Fair Game

7 Jan

I am attending omy’s event for the first time and I am glad to watch Fair Game at this exclusive Shaw Preview Theatre this evening.  Like myself, the couple sitting beside me must have had enjoyed themselves terribly as the gentleman kept on laughing out loud at the weirdest intervals and the lady shaking her legs uncontrollably.  However, pardon me for the lack of a funny bone, but seriously I do not find the firing of gun at the funeral or the scene when Joe Wilson was touching up his face for the TV appearance anything funny 🙂

Fair Game Review

The film kicked off with Kulua Lumpur’s twin tower as the backdrop and Naomi Watts as Valerie Plame, the CIA operative agent. Fair Game is a suspense-action thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame (Naomi Watts) and her husband Joe Wilson (Sean Penn).

In the movie, Valerie Plame is the CIA operative whose secret was exposed by the columnist Robert Novak. She runs a team of spies in her office and one of her operations is to spirit away nuclear scientists from Iraq. Her husband, Joe Wilson is an ex-diplomat who has served 3 US administrations, 5 African countries and was the last American diplomat to meet Saddam Hussein. Later, he was sent to Niger by the CIA to investigate the sale of yellowcake between Africa and Iraq. When his findings did not stop the White House from declaring war to Iraq, he took the matter in his own hands and had his views published. To discredit him, a political press leak on Valerie’s cover was blown up in papers and immediately destroyed her career, strained their marriage and put their lives in danger.

In the verge breaking down and tearing apart, the story took a turn and the couple stood up and fought back.

Overall it may be another typical egoistic America movie but nonetheless, it is an entertaining film with great political insights and watching both Naomi Watts’s and Sean Penn’s remarkable performance is already worth the dollars.

Verdict:
